This stylish shopper bag will be your best companion when you go downtown, not only for shopping. You will fall in love with its natural colour which goes well with every outfit. Cattail (also known as bulrush, latin name Typha latifolia, is growing in the lake) is an extraordinary material: waterproof, ultralight, and extremely durable. You can take it with you everywhere!

The bag is a perfect choice if you love natural and unusual materials. It is definitely one of a kind, woven locally by Polish craftspeople. Shopper bag - this is a beautiful, natural, and unique product that combines the extraordinary craftsmanship of the master with respect for cultural heritage. It is one of the last such products in Serfenta's offer, linked to the age of the basketmaker, Ms. Helena, and the end of her professional activity.

For possessing cattail, you need to go into the lake and cut the material by hands. Basketry Master Helena cuts every leaf manually and then carefully weaves the bags. She weaves every bag with a heart and with a huge experience.  It's a lot of work, but the effect is splendid, the bag is perfect in general and in details.

In this material, the most difficult is to get it. Years ago cattail used to be obtained for tons in Poland, today no one organizes cattail harvest, only a few people weave of this material (Serfenta cooperates with three of them). In winter, you need to find a pond which is drained and in which a good-quality plant grows – not always is suitable. You have to spend a whole day in the cold and wind, in unpleasant conditions. Go down into the mud, sometimes almost drown – that’s what we know from the story of Helena, who despite her age decided to do it with us!

Elegant and light (really, incredibly light), this handbag is made from an extraordinary material that’s hard to obtain. Cattail is the underwater part of the water bulrush, which is manually harvested once a year in difficult conditions in a pond, then dried and seasoned—this makes our bag waterproof. The material is obtained and woven by the master weaver. She carefully selects the material for its colour and ensures the strength of the weave, which is truly perfect. The shape refers to a traditional pattern of baskets from the Lublin region, but it’s made by Ms. Helena to special order. The woven material is very strong and durable.

Master Helena manually cuts each stalk and carefully weaves this bag, pouring her heart and experience into it. Each blade is cut by hand with a sickle by Helena and her family. Then the heavy bundles are taken out and transported to the garden, where they season in large stacks until summer. The harvest lasts all day or several days. This is what happened this year, after many years of break on such a scale.

We can offer this bag to you thanks to our long-standing friendships formed during Serfenta’s basketry expeditions. By purchasing it, you support local Polish craft and Basketry Master Helena directly. You can be sure, that by choosing this product, you are supporting local handcraft.

Interesting facts:

The most difficult part of this material is obtaining it. Once, cattails were harvested by the ton in Poland, but today no one organizes cattail harvests anymore—only a few people weave with it (we work with two of them at Serfenty). In winter, you must find a pond where high-quality cattails grow—not all are suitable. One must spend the day in the cold and wind, in unpleasant conditions. You have to wade through mud, sometimes almost sinking—that’s what we know from Ms. Helena’s stories, who, despite her age and the difficulty, decided to take part in it with us! Afterward, the cattail is seasoned, cleaned, and sorted for six months before it can be woven. Think about how long it took to make your bag! You can read more about this master, the material, and interesting facts from the world of weaving in our book.

Helena Rogala

Basketry Master Helena Rogala – Cattail Queen – one of the last remaining basket makers who weave unique cattail bags for us. More than 10 years ago, Serfenta became fascinated with the unusual Polish basketry material – cattail, also called bulrush, typha latifolia.

During the expeditions in search of basketry masters, we found the master Helena Rogala, called cattail queen, who weaves typha precisely and beautifully like no one else. And we began our long-term cooperation and friendship with her. Serfena has cooperated with Helena for 13 years. Along with her family, she cuts cattail manually in muddy ponds. Each blade is cut by hand with a sickle by Helena and her family. Then the heavy bundles are taken out and transported to the garden, where they season in large stacks until summer. The harvest lasts all day or several days. Then she cleans the material uses it to weave. Helena’s bags are part of our offer thanks to our long-standing friendships formed during Serfenta’s basketry expeditions.
